Date: June 25, 2005 (John Drew Theatre, East Hampton, NY)Overview: David Strathairn took part in the WordTheatre's An Evening of Unusual Love Stories, which benefited the Pushcart Prize Fellowships. The Pushcart Prize is considered the most honored literary project in America. The reading benefit, taking place at 8 p.m., included many other well-known artists including Bob Balaban, Samantha Mathis, Peter Boyle, Andrew McCarthy, and Marcia Gay Harden (whom David previously appeared with in the Only We Who Guard the Mystery Shall Be Unhappy reading for the Topia Arts Center.) David read a short story entitled "The Moor" by writer Russell Banks. The plot for Bank's "The Moor" is as follows: Synopsis: One night at a restaurant, Warren Lowe notices a striking older woman celebrating her 80th birthday. He's seen her before. Thirty years earlier, when she was 49 and he was 19, they were entangled in an intense, secret love affair, which ended when Gail moved away. As he struggles to connect the vivacious, middle-aged woman of his past with the old woman he sees now, the two of them take a bittersweet journey through time, place and memory. "The Moor" is a haunting tale about love and loss, youth and old age, dreams and disappointments, truths and lies.
