Ashes To Ashes (1999) - photo copyright © Roundabout Theatre Company | Role: Devlin Running Dates: January 19 - May 5, 1999 (Roundabout Theatre, New York, NY) Director: Karel Reisz(No Tagline)Synopsis: Devlin and Rebecca are an all-too-modern couple caught in a web of their own barbarism. The characters explore the apparent link between sexual and political fascism and the way one echoes, and sometimes contradicts, the other in this powerful and intense 45-minute drama. Cast: David Strathairn .... Devlin Lindsay Duncan .... Rebecca Notes: • David starred in the U.S. premiere production of Harold Pinter's Ashes to Ashes. • Ashes To Ashes is one of several Pinter plays David has done. He has also starred in Pinter's The Birthday Party and Mountain Language. Critical Praise & Commentary: • "The bad news in Ashes to Ashes is vividly conveyed by the performers. Strathairn is particularly capable in charged moments, like the one where he places his hands around Duncan's neck in a kind of menacing caress..." -Bob Cashill, Playbill Online • "The actors, David Strathairn and especially Lindsay Duncan, are fine..." -John Simon, New York Metro • "It's more rewarding to savor the pleasure of absorbing Pinter's dialogue and the impeccable acting by Lindsay Duncan and David Strathairn as the couple batting lines at each other, sometimes eliciting direct responses, sometimes seeming non sequiturs... The actors command our absolute attention by the expert way in which they handle the playwright's cryptic dialogue... Strathairn delivers his performance mostly standing. At the end he imitates an act of domination that Rebecca has attributed to her lover." -Wolf Entertainment Guide • "...Strathairn gives a textually impeccable performance under Karel Reisz's studied direction..." -Charles Isherwood, Variety (Tony Walton On David:) • "[David Strathairn is] enormously gifted--and game. Actors' Equity was somewhat appeased by learning that both actors would be seated throughout much of the play." -Tony Walton, Scenic Designer Related Links: HaroldPinter.org - Ashes To Ashes (off site) |
