Role: Narrator Running Date: October 9, 2004 (Ozawa Hall, Tanglewood, MA) Director: Tina PackerOverview: To mark Nathaniel Hawthorne's 200th birthday, Shakespeare & Company hosted a birthday party and fund-raising gala at Tanglewood's Ozawa Hall. Guest celebrities (besides David) who came to help in the celebration were CBS newsman Mike Wallace, and actresses Jane Fonda and Marisa Tomei. All appeared in the program Hawthorne Revisited, in which they were featured in selected readings and performances from The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, The Marble Faun, a scene from Carol Gilligan's stage adaptation of The Scarlet Letter, notes by Hawthorne about his writing technique, and his observations about the Civil War. David himself was personally invited to the gala by the program's writer and producer, Gordon Hyatt, who had long admired David's work and asked him to read a piece Hawthorne had written about Abraham Lincoln.
