Only We Who Guard the Mystery Shall Be Unhappy created a lot of controversy in the town of Adams, MA. Some felt it should not be read at the school, calling it "anti-American."

Critical Praise & Commentary:
(David On His Role:)
• [on the play] "Kushner (the playwright) deliberately made the play controversial to create a dialogue." -David Strathairn, 2005

• "It's unheard of to have this kind of venue here. The play was important as a catalyst to start off the Topia Arts space, which will offer a continual place for people to speak out. What a great thing for the town of Adams." -David Strathairn, 2005
