Not many actors possess the talented range and abilities that David has. And in a business that thrives on mediocrative performances, mere looks and lots of money, real talent like David tends to go unrewarded. Unappreciated. Thankfully, a growing number of viewers are finally acknowledging unique and true artists like David. And that is why I started this website.

I have been a fan of David's amazing work for several years, having followed his work consistently since I was twelve years old. I saw Simon Birch with a friend when it was in theatres and have been hooked ever since. My "endeavor" with this website, David Strathairn Online, began on November 8, 2004 and continues to grow. I created David Strathairn Online because, as a long-time admirer of this man's work, I really just wanted to share in that appreciation with others. David, to me, is not only one of the greatest contemporary actors working today but, in my humble opinion, he is one of the greatest actors we've ever had. And, on top of that, he's a very admirable person simply for who he is.

If he wanted to, David could easily be a leading Hollywood actor with plenty of money, fame, and a sickly amount of ego. Yet, unlike most actors who tend to get caught up in that illusion, he has never sought fame or recognition. To David, it is clear from the beginning that it is always, first and foremost, about the work. The story, the heart, the characters. His dedication to those elements is key. He works hard. He does independent projects where there is little money involved. He takes risks. He works with new, unknown, up-and-coming directors and playwrights. He's courageous. He takes parts--some of which are dark and disturbing--that many actors could never pull off or go to in their craft. He's passionate. It is clear, in whatever project David becomes involved with, that he cares deeply for the story being told--not just his particular part but the project as a whole. Every story means something to him. And, furthermore, I appreciate the man's principles, which are evident by the various charities and organizations David supports; his commitment to the telling of stories and preservation of the Arts is strong and commendable. Living and working in the Arts myself, and it being such a vital and important part of our culture, it's a wonderful thing to see David's name attached to those commitments, both as an artist and supporter. Lastly, for all these remarkable qualities, David has sustained an ongoing positive reputation from both his peers and fans for being a kind, down-to-earth gentleman and co-worker...without a shred of an ego. (And for an actor of David's talent, that's saying something!) It is lovely to see that, as talented and respected as David is, he carries it all wonderfully without any flair or false bravado.

It's hard not to admire someone like that, and that is why David Strathairn Online is here. It was created by a fan for the fans--a comprehensive, ever-growing tribute to a wonderful actor and person. For the past year and a half, this website has undergone many face-lifts and transformations. And through this learning process I have come to meet other Strathairn fans who appreciate this man's work as much as I do. And that's great! I've also come to meet people who are being introduced to David's work for the first time and learning more about his career through this website. That, too, is terrific! The more audiences come to appreciate and familiarize themselves with this impressive actor, then I know maintaining this website through all the sweat, blood and tears has been worth it. :)
